The paving has begun on this road. I would recommend to not ride on this road till complete.

If you do ride, I STRONGLY SUGGEST that you drive by the same day (after the nightly work is complete) prior to your ride and make sure that the shoulder is passable for the entire distance. I know that today, Oct 12, the westbound lane had a shoulder that was not usable.

I got this from FDOT today. bottom line is that from now (mid Dec) till January, there will be no usable shoulder on Hwy 98 between Destin and Ft Walton.

From Melvin Rhodes, Project Administrator -

As soon as the weather warms up crews will be laying the final layer of asphalt (friction course) on the shoulders.  Open grade friction course cannot be placed below 40 degrees.  At this time the contractor intends to begin paving the shoulders in the Fort Walton Beach area in January.  If you would like to speak with Melvin, he can be reached @ 850-872-8044 or cell 850-596-1532.  Thank you
