If you are new to the area or just visiting, the following are some ideas for rides that you might want to do. Also, refer to our newsletter for current club rides that we have every Saturday year round.

Niceville

You can start in Bluewater Bay, head east on hwy 20 to Freeport which is 20 miles away. Return the same route for a 450 mile ride.

During Daylight Savings Time we have the "Cappuccino Ride" every Thursday at 5 pm that will go from the Winn Dixie sign in the Bluewater Bay Shopping Center. It heads over the Mid-Bay Bridge, takes a Cappuccino break in Destin, and returns. Google on these coordinates to find the exact start point: "30.486495,-86.420431". This is an easy paced ride.

Fort Walton Beach

Our local riders have a "Tuesday night ride" that starts at the intersection of Ranger Camp Road and Lewis Turner Blvd in Ft Walton Beach. Google on these coordinates to find the exact intersection: "30.479922,-86.592168". The nice thing about this ride is that it is on the Eglin reservation so there is virtually no traffic and the cars that are on the road are used to us. The road is in good shape too. This ride has lots of participation, but in the winter when we are no longer on daylight savings time a smaller group of people will usually start earlier.

The distance is 38 miles (19 out and then the same 19 back). A fast group starts at 5pm, normal speed 25+.  A more moderate group usually starts at about 4:30pm and holds about 21-22. Other riders go out individually or in smaller groups and ride at lower speeds. This is not an "organized" club event as it really is more just a day and time that everybody knows is when everybody else is riding.

Riding on Ranger Camp Road requires an Eglin AFB "Range Pass" which costs about $10 and is good till October. It can be purchased at Jackson Guard, 107 Hwy 85 N, Niceville, FL 32578-1905, (850) 882-4164. They might be able to mail it to you if you call. By the way, if you have a range pass, you can ride this road any day of the week.

Sandestin

You can ride up and down hwy 30A (very scenic) but watch for cars. Stop at Seaside or Watercolor for a snack. Lots of fun.

Hi there.  We are planning a trip to Destin the week of July 4th.  We are interested in bringing our road bikes, but have some concern about traffic and riding during the holiday week.  Do you think we would have problems with road riding?  Thanks in advance.  Dawn
